Haas Campaign: Haas Endorses Chris Larson for Milwaukee County Board

February 20, 2008 — Milwaukee — Jason Haas, former candidate for the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, has endorsed Chris Larson for the April 1 general election.

“The voters of the Fourteenth District have spoken, and they want Chris Larson to represent them on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors,” Haas said. “I congratulate Chris on his decisive win in the primary, and I am proud to give him my endorsement and full support.

“Chris has earned my endorsement for two reasons. First, he is committed to working full time on the County Board. Given the dire financial and infrastructure problems the County faces, we need all of our County representatives working full time to restore and renew the County.

“Second, Chris knows that having clean parks will ensure a higher quality of life for all of us in Milwaukee County, and he will fight to get the county parks the full funding they deserve. I know Chris has the judgment and wisdom to make a great Supervisor. I look forward to voting for Chris on April 1st.”

“Finally, thank you to my great neighbors in Bay View and Milwaukee’s South Side, and to outgoing Supervisor Richard Nyklewicz for his many years of service.”

Larson won the February 19 primary with 4,540 votes. Haas came in fourth place with 1,413 votes.

A graceful exit from the race

February 20, 2008

The results are in: I didn’t win! And I’ve never been so happy to say that. With all the votes totaled, I won 1,413 votes, or 13%. So why am I happy about this?

For one, I’m the new guy in the race. I’ve lived in Milwaukee’s south side for about two years, but while doing doors, I met people who’d lived here almost sixty years – in the same house. I’ve got a great respect for the people of the south side, and feel more at home here than I have anywhere.

Second, I got my message out, albeit in a limited manner. When doing doors, one or more of my Three Principles resonated with the people I met. Clean Parks was strong among virtually everyone, but I especially heard from parents of young children who rely on the parks to be clean and safe places for them and their children to play. Clean Air was the least visible principle (no pun intended), while many people identified Clean Government as what they felt most strongly was needed in Milwaukee County.

Second, I can now help Chris Larson, whom I have described as “the other good guy.” Chris was the big winner tonight, coming in first place with 4,540 votes. Chris has been doing things right, running a positive race and doing doors as much as he could. It is with great confidence that I fully throw my support behind Chris Larson for the Milwaukee County 14th District.

Now that it’s over, I will wrap up the race, and devote myself to my studies at UW-Milwaukee. Thanks for your support, and as always, have fun!

Best,
Jason.

It has recently come to light that not all of the candidates in the 14th District race plan to devote themselves to the tasks facing the next Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. Despite what one candidate has said, the County Board is not a part time job. The County’s dire financial situation requires its supervisors to be devoted to leading the County out of the mess it’s in. How can a Supervisor do this if he or she is only working a few hours a week, or just showing up for votes once a month? He can’t. I will work for you on the County Board full time, listening to you, and talking with you. Thank you, and I look forward to your vote.

The video from the Milwaukee 14th District County Supervisor Candidate Forum is now posted on YouTube. Shall we have a captioning contest for the first frame?

A few weeks ago, I attended the ballot drawing held by the County Election Commission to determine the order of names on the ballot for candidates in the Feb. 19th primary. (Nothing like up-to-the-minute blogging, eh?)

As it turns out, my name will be the third name on the ballot. And as it so happens, the shortest name, which makes it easier to find. Just connect the lines, and we will go from there.

The Shepherd Express has an article comparing the four candidates running in my race. It looks like it’s coming down to night-and-day choices. Two of my opponents stand with Scott Walker. I stand with my neighbors!
