In memory of the Challenger crew

Once you get old enough, you know how amazing it is to hear that some event happened twenty-five years ago, and that was within your lifetime. Many of you may share that feelings when you read or heard today that we lost the Space Shuttle Challenger twenty-five years ago today. I was in fifth grade at the time. It was an abnormally warm day in Wisconsin, which is why i was on the swing set at school, when somebody walked up and asked me if I’d heard about what happened to the Challenger. “It blew up,” they explained.

Sure enough, it had. I remember being glued to the television the rest of the day, watching the endless replay of the shuttle’s fiery doom, wondering what happened to the astronauts onboard.

It is very appropriate that as I write this, my son Ellison, all of six months old, is dozing on my lap. As previously discussed, we chose that name to honor mission specialist Ellison Onizuka, one of the seven astronauts who we lost on January 28, 1986.

I would like to remember them all: Michael J. SmithDick ScobeeRonald McNairEllison OnizukaChrista McAuliffeGregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnik.

It’s official: I’m on the spring 2011 ballot for Milwaukee County Supervisor! This is actually very old news, but I’ve been focused on knocking on doors rather than blogging. I think you can understand.

Here’s my campaign contact info:

I am running Milwaukee County’s 14th District, which roughly includes the southeast corner of Bay View, the airport, and areas west to 27th Street including the Wilson Park neighborhood. (Here’s the district map, if you’re curious.)

My campaign has been off to a great start! Here’s what’s been written about it thus far by my campaign and the media:

It’s a shame he won’t be out in the world any longer

By that, I mean Jared Lee Loughner, the “alleged” child-killer and would-be assassin.

Jared Loughner mugshot

From the look of it, he has the makings of a fine cult leader.

Why all the attention to the RNC Chair race?

As I remarked over on Illy T’s blog, I’m a bit amazed at how much attention the RNC chairman race has received, given how few people can vote for that seat. (The number, by the way, is 168.) You’d think it was the next presidential election with all the heat it’s getting.

As I [now] conduct my campaign by going door-to-door rather than via blog, content on here has gotten quite scarce as of late. So it’s good to see that one of the best voices of the lefty Cheddarsphere get back into the mix. Welcome, Mondo Media, nee “Plaisted Writes.”

It’s 2011.
