Campaign season is upon us again

At first, I thought my evening at the Chill on the Hill concert in Humboldt Park would be a lovely evening of tabling with the Bay View Neighborhood Association and enjoying the rockabilly rhythms of the Uptown Savages. But as so frequently happens in my life, politics not only found a way into it. (not that I mind, of course), but came walking straight toward me. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm and County Treasurer Dan Diliberti were making their through the crowd on the hill at Humboldt Park, collecting signatures on their nomination papers.

While neither County Clerk Mark Ryan or Register of Deeds John LaFave were there, I encourage both men to do so at the June 17 concert. The Squeezettes, Milwaukee’s premiere accordion-tuba-mandolin polka band is sure to draw a good crowd, though you could always use the Milwaukee American Legion Band to provide an appropriate backdrop of patriotic music. The Jamie Breiwick Sextet‘s July 1 show may be pushing the deadline for getting signatures, and Testa Rosa‘s July 8 show will definitely be too late. But you’re always welcome at the Chill!

Also, please allow me to mention that Drinking Liberally meets at 7:00 PM on the third Wednesday of each month over at Sugar Maple, 441 E. Lincoln Ave. It is always a good place to find signatures and supporters. Between the many beers on tap and the smoke-free air, it’s the only place I’ve found where politics blends so well with a good time for all. Though teetotalers are welcome too — it is Drinking Liberally after all.
