Blogging about South Ossetia and the confusion about the issue

Deke Rivers’s posts about South Ossetia have contained some grim pictures of destroyed and burning buildings. Both his blog and James Rowen’s have stirred up some passionate comments by their respective readers. I saw a picture earlier today of a Georgian woman sitting on rubble, bleeding from multiple places on her body, and weeping from the shock and horror of what she’s going through. None of it makes sense, none of it would make sense anyway, even if no civilians were getting hurt or killed. But they are.

As a student of Russian culture and history, I honestly find it a little baffling. But it shows you me what I don’t know and what infinite amounts I have yet to learn about that part of the world.
