A genuinely genuine word of thanks to Tom Daschle

In the blogosphere, sometimes it seems necessary to employ a  redundant deployment of adjectives to indicate that I am not being facetious, or thanking him as some right-wing blowhard may do with a truly liberal dose of sarcasm.

Rather, I do seriously thank Tom Daschle for withdrawing himself from consideration for Secretary of Health and Human Services. It appears that President Obama is trying to do away with the sort of lobbyists-as-cabinet members. With that, he could hypothetically rid his administration of having much of the weight and influence of industry that would press upon someone who’d made huge sums of money from an industry, as did Mr. Daschle from his time in the “health industry.” It is also my hope that we do not find ourselves saddled with someone even more influenced and paid off by said industry, someone who would leave us wishing Daschle had accepted — if only it weren’t for that small issue of the luxury car and accompanying driver…

Also: President Obama says he made a mistake with the nomination. I think the last time we heard a president saying he made a mistake was…

Bill Clinton?
