The Unkindest Cuts of All – Grassroots Group Critical of Pending County Reductions in Social Services
Press contact: Keith R. Schmitz
Reacting to recently announced cuts in Milwaukee county social services by
County Executive Scott Walker, Milwaukee County First Chair Chris Liebenthal
terms these reductions as an “attack on the most vulnerable in our society,
turning the budget into a weapon rather than a responsible means for running
Among the trims suggested in the county’s Health and Human Services budget
request were eliminating the county’s entire $1 million support for homeless
shelters, $2.4 million in cuts to programs helping elderly and disabled people,
$721,000 cut from programs for delinquents and cutting nearly all support for a
burial program for low-income families. That would save about $300,000.
County supervisors are speculating there are more cuts to come.
“This is a result of the County Executive blindly following ideology in his quest for
the governor’s mansion,” according to Liebenthal. He points to Walker’s previous
budgets over the past years, which froze the levy at the prior year’s level, and
Walker’s refusal to accept federal stimulus money for social service needs.
“As usual Walker has failed to think about Milwaukee County resident first,” says
Leibenthal. “This action on the very day we were launched loudly points to the
need of this organization.”
