New START treaty delayed in U.S. Senate by… John Kerry?!

So it is. Quoting MyDD:

Senator John Kerry, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee delayed a vote on the new START arms control treaty (pdf) with Russia today after Republican Senators requested more time to review documents and hear comments from the Armed Services Committee.

Riiiight. The treaty was signed back in March, and they need more time. Because four months isn’t enough time to kill it review it.

Come on. First of all, I don’t think Sen. Kerry will be able to get many more Republicans to sign on to this when they’re so affixed on blocking all things Obama. I hope like hell that he can get seven or eight more in order to pass it. Frankly, I find it perplexing that the Republicans are more interested in trying to derail everything in President Obama’s legacy and agenda than protecting the nation and the world from the overwhelming number of nuclear weapons that we still have. But then again, given who we’re dealing with, it’s not that surprising at all.
